On the same day of its debut, Scott Free Productions has acquired the rights to Lawrence Wright’s pandemic novel The End of October with the studio looking to adapt it for either a film or TV series with Ridley Scott (The Last Duel) being eyed to potentially direct, according to Deadline.

The novel focuses on Henry Parsons, a microbiologist and epidemiologist, who travels to an internment camp in Indonesia on behalf of the World Health Organization to investigate the death of 47 people from acute hemorrhagic fever. He soon learns that an infected man is on his way to join the millions of worshippers in the annual Hajj to Mecca and must join forces with a Saudi prince and doctor in an attempt to quarantine the entire host of pilgrims in the holy city. The story also follows a Russian émigré, a woman who has risen to deputy director of U.S. Homeland Security as she scrambles to mount a response to what may be an act of biowarfare.

The idea for the novel reportedly came to Wright roughly six years ago from Scott when the Golden Globe winner asked Wright if a societal breakdown in an apocalyptic even could actually happen after having read Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. Reports say that the studio is carefully considering its path of attack on the adaptation, given world events and that whichever direction they head, they shall deliver a sizable donation to the front line workers battling the current pandemic.

Reports are stating that one of the primary distribution studios looking to get in on the deal is Netflix, who has seen large numbers for the similarly-themed 1995 ensemble thriller Outbreak and the public has seen a resurgence of interest in Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 ensemble Contagion.

Wright is the Pulitzer-winning author of The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11, which was adapted into a miniseries for Hulu in 2018 that received rave reviews from critics and audiences and was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards.

So it turns out there is just one more reason to love musician and actress Dolly Parton. The beloved star is best known for her collection of country music songs, as well as her acting in classic movies like 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias. She is also a champion of children, with the charity she owns that ships books to children in their first years of life, as well as her many charitable contributions to children’s hospitals and other literary groups.

She is a wonderful person who has used her fame and fortune for the betterment of others, and now we have another reason to add to the list of things that make her a very cool lady.

At the end of each episode of the cult classic TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, we see the logo for Sandollar Productions, and we are just finding out that the company was created by Parton and her former business partner, Sandy Gallin. The company produced several familiar titles like the Father of the Bride films, Sabrina, Fly Away Home, and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer film as well. This is a very cool link, and it’s fun to know that Parton had a hand in the series.

Are you a fan of the songstress and the titles she has produced?

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. wrapped production on its final season last summer, long before COVID-19 essentially brought the entertainment industry to a halt.

The series stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie, Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez, John Hannah as Holden Radcliffe, Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi Morse, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Luke Mitchell as Lincoln Campbell, and Nick Blood as Lance Hunter.

The series was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who also serve as executive producers along with Jeffrey Bell and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.

The final season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will also mark the end of Marvel Television as we’ve come to know it over the past several years. Once Kevin Feige assumed his new role as Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer, the company’s TV division was absorbed by Marvel Studios, giving Feige control over all small-screen ventures. Although the series is ending, at least one cast member is convinced that its characters won’t completely disappear from the MCU landscape. Last fall, Ming-Na Wen suggested that Melinda May could have a role to play in future Marvel projects.

One Day At a Time Getting Spring Animated Special

One Day At a Time getting spring animated special

After finding successful new life on Pop TV, the reimagining of Norman Lear’s One Day At a Time is finding a new way to continue around the unfortunate global pandemic with the announcement of a spring animated special, according to Deadline.

Filming on the fourth season was halted in mid-March amidst the growing health concerns and executive producer/co-showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett brought the idea of an animated episode with fellow executive producer/co-showrunner Mike Royce after developing it with her cartoonist husband. The duo then pitched it to producing studio Sony Pictures TV, which helped get development underway on the special.

In my 97 years, I’ve never known of a multicam comedy to animate a single episode as a special,” Lear said in a statement. “Even this I get to experience.”

The special will center on Penelope’s conservative family visiting and the dread she’s feeling over the upcoming election and how it will affect their interactions, believing it will lead to a fight over politics. The Alvarez family will spend the episode discussing strategies of how to get through this, illustrated through fantasy sequences, with Jonas Diamond, executive producer and co-owner of Smiley Guy Studios in Toronto overseeing the animation.

The storyline for the episode was originally planned for a live-action production with virtual effects versus animation, but when the pandemic hit and production was shut down, the creators pivoted to the animation decision, namely as it would have no connection to the overall arc of the season.

As we all know, it’s hard to keep One Day At a Time off the air. During this unprecedented time, we wanted to find a way to keep our family – on camera and behind the scenes – together and create more entertaining content for our fans who are self-distancing at home,” Kellett said in a statement. “This animated special gives us an exciting opportunity to imagine the Alvarez family in a colorful new way while continuing to tell important and relevant stories.

The mid-season finale of One Day At a Time, is set to air on April 28 simulcasted on Pop TV and TV Land. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, Act III Productions, Inc., Snowpants Productoins and GloNation, along with Lear, Mike Royce, Kellett and Brent Miller as executive producers.

Seth Rogen’s AN AMERICAN PICKLE Movie Moves From Sony to HBO Max

seth-rogens-an-american-pickle-movie-moves-from-sony-to-hbo-max-social.jpg

Seth Rogen has been developing a new comedy at Sony Pictures titled An American Pickle. According to Deadline, that film project has jumped from Sony to HBO Max, which launches on May 27th. There’s no word on when the movie will be released, though.

The movie is an adaptation of the 2013 New Yorker series Sell Out by Simon Rich, who also wrote the script. The story follows “an immigrant worker at a pickle factory (played by Rogen) who is accidentally preserved for 100 years and wakes up in modern day Brooklyn. He learns his only surviving relative is his great-grandson (also portrayed by Rogen), a computer coder who he can’t connect with.”

This is certainly going to make for an interesting movie! The concept is absolutely ridiculous, so it’s the perfect kind of project for Rogen to be a part of! I’m sure it’ll make for a funny flick.

The cast for Riley Stearns (The Art of Self-Defense)’ next project, the sci-fi thriller Dual, is building up in a major fashion as Aaron Paul (Westworld) and Karen Gillan (Jumanji: The Next Level) have joined the roster, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film, which is being written and directed by Stearns, will follow a terminally ill woman (Gillan) who opts for a cloning procedure to ease her loss on her friends and family, but when she makes a miraculous recovery, she tries and fails to have her clone decommissioned, leading to a court-mandated duel to the death.

In addition to Paul and Gillan, the cast will feature a major ensemble including Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-0, Next Goal Wins), Martha Kelly (Baskets, Marriage Story) and Jesse Eisenberg (Vivarium, Resistance). This film marks the second collaboration between Eisenberg and Stearns after the acclaimed 2019 black-comedy thriller The Art of Self-Defense.

Stearns is producing the project alongside XYZ Films, which is set to handle global sales for the project, which is hoping to begin production later this summer and go up for sale at the agency-led virtual Cannes market.

Dual will continue Paul’s recent exploration of the sci-fi genre after having starred in the Emmy-winning Black Mirror episode “USS Callister” and in the current third season of HBO’s Westworld, which is set to air its season finale on Sunday. Gillan is no stranger to the genre, having made her breakout in Doctor Who alongside Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor and going on to star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nebula, as well as the hit Jumanji sequel franchise.
