Sharp Stick: Lena Dunham Wraps Production on Secret Movie

According to Variety, production on Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham’s newly announced feature titled Sharp Stick has officially been completed. The film was reportedly shot secretly over the past months in Los Angeles with a crew led by mostly female department heads. This secret project marks Dunham’s first feature film as a writer-director after over ten years since her acclaimed comedy-drama film Tiny Furniture in 2010. Further details about the film’s plot still being kept under wraps but Dunham did describe the project as something “incredibly personal” to her. She also teased that Sharp Stick will deal with “the complexities of female sexuality.”

Sharp Stick is directed and written by Dunham, who is also starring in the film. Joining her are Kristine Froseth (The Society, The Assistant), Taylour Paige (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jon Bernthal (The Punisher, Ford v Ferrari), Scott Speedman (Best Sellers).

“I made my last feature film 11 years ago in my family home with just a few close friends. It’s a testament to FilmNation and my incredible producers, cast, crew and — especially — my COVID-19 compliance team that this experience felt just as intimate and creatively free,” Dunham said in a statement. “This story is incredibly personal to me and a continuation of my career-long mission to create a free dialogue around the complexities of female sexuality and to turn the idea of the ‘likable’ female protagonist on its head —and you can’t do that in this business on any scale larger than your mother’s living room without forward thinking partners. I feel very lucky.”

The film is produced by Dunham through Good Thing Going banner with Soham Joglekar as an associate producer. Paige and Bernthal will also be serving as executive producers along with FilmNation’s Glen Basner and Ben Browning. Kenneth Yu, Will Greenfiled, and Harrison Kreiss are also executive producing.

Dunham’s first venture into writing and directing was a 2006 short film titled Dealing and 2009’s Creative Nonfiction. She then gained recognition for her work in 2010’s Tiny Furniture which served as a semi-autobiographical pic with her real mother and sister, Laurie Simmons and Cyrus Grace Dunham appearing in the film. Following that, she starred in HBO’s acclaimed comedy-drama series Girls, which she created, directed, written, and executive produced. For her work in the series, she earned a number of Emmy and Golden Globe nominations and winning two of them.

Sandkings: Gore Verbinski to Helm Netflix Adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Novelette

A feature adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Sandkings is in the works at Netflix with Oscar winner Gore Verbinski (Rango, Pirates of the Caribbean, A Cure for Wellness) set to direct the project. The adaptation is based on Martin’s 1979 novelette of the same name. The story was originally published in the sci-fi magazine Omni in August 1979 and won the Hugo and Nebula awards. It was later published in the short story collection Sandkings as well as Martin’s Dreamsongs. Dennis Kelly, creator of the original British series Utopia, will adapt the screenplay.

During an interview with Collider, Verbinski discussed his current projects, saying that “one of the screenplays is based on a George R.R. Martin short story called Sandkings, which is this brilliant little twisted short story that I love. And I’m working with a great writer, Dennis Kelly, who wrote the original [Utopia]… The British original series is brilliant. And Dennis is doing the adaptation, so I’m kind of excited about that.”

According to the outlet, the story, set in Martin’s fictional Thousand Worlds universe, “follows a wealthy playboy named Simon Kress who collects dangerous, exotic animals. One day, he stumbles across a mysterious establishment called Wo & Shade, where he purchases a terrarium filled with four colonies of creatures called sandkings, which grow to fill whatever environment they are kept in. Each colony consists of a large female called the maw, and numerous insect-like mobiles that she controls via telepathy. In addition to finding food for the maw, the mobiles also construct a sandcastle around her to protect the maw from invading colonies.

“Indeed, the four colonies — white, black, red and orange — often engage in coordinated wars with one another, especially once their new owner makes them fight over food by starving them. Simon begins taking bets on the outcomes of these wars, which leave some of his friends impressed, and others disgusted. Eventually, the sandkings escape Simon’s terrarium and begin to take over his house as their hunger — and Simon’s desperation — intensifies.”

John Baldecchi (The Mexican) will produce Sandkings through his Digital Riot Media banner.

Sandkings was previously adapted in 1995 as a television film starring Beau Bridges that served as the first episode of The Outer Limits relaunch. The script was adapted by Melinda M. Snodgrass, Martin’s co-editor for the Wild Cards series. In 1987, the story was adapted as a graphic novel from DC Comics by writer Doug Moench and artists Pat Broderick and Neal McPheeters.

Trailer for the Sci-Fi Paranoia Thriller VOYAGERS Starring Tye Sheridan and Lily-Rose Depp

Lionsgate released the first teaser trailer for a new sci-fi space thriller titled Voyagers. This film tells an interesting story about a group of young men and women who embark on a mission in space that leads to a journey of paranoia and madness after they discover their senses can be heightened to the extreme.

The story is set in a future where the human race at stake, “a group of young men and women, bred for intelligence and obedience, embark on an expedition to colonize a distant planet. But when they uncover disturbing secrets about the mission, they defy their training and begin to explore their most primitive natures. As life on the ship descends into chaos, they’re consumed by fear, lust, and the insatiable hunger for power.”

The ensemble cast of the film includes Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp, Fionn Whitehead, Chanté Adams, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Viveik Kalra, Archie Madekwe, Quintessa Swindell, Madison Hu, and Colin Farrell.

Voyagers is both written and directed by American filmmaker Neil Burger (The Illusionist, The Lucky Ones, Limitless, Divergent, and The Upside), and it looks pretty good! I’ll definitely be checking it out. The movie is set to hit theaters on April 9th, 2021.
