Review: NEON KONBINI Is Full of Weird, Fun, and Awesome Shorts

neon_konbini.jpg

Neon Konbini is a new series from Rooster Teeth with various shorts compiled into a single episode. The series premiered last Friday and will run for 8 weekly episodes and is directed by Jordan Cwierz and produced by Sean Hinz. It features shorts like RWBY Chibi, Hero High, and brand new ones that vary drastically. The show is exclusive to First members (included in a VRV subscription), and Rooster Teeth was kind enough to give me the first 3 episodes to check out.

Due to the nature of the show, Neon Konbini is a grab bag. Not everything will be a hit, but the variety does allow for a very wide audience as one thing may not be popular with one person, but could be another’s favorite part of the show. For instance, there’s a section in each episode where someone (I imagine a staff member at Rooster Teeth) drunkenly talks about a random game that they enjoy. Some people are going to enjoy this while others think it’s boring as someone talks about Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak. Here are some of the ones that I think have more potential.

RWBY Chibi is first on my list and probably the most recognizable. It’s already had a few seasons of being its own thing and has a fan base. The one thing that will divide fans is that we only get one of the segments per episode instead of the 3-5 segments that used to create an episode. Previously, episodes would feature shorts that typically tied together in some form and I hope that similar threads are still weaved in the new format.

Next is Hero High. This is a fantastic animated series from YouTube. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, the series had to be canceled after only a few episodes. It looks like it might get new life thanks to Neon Konbini and new fans are already falling in love. There is a catch though. Hero High episodes were roughly 4-6 minutes long (the premiere taking 8 minutes) and this means that for Neon Konbini, those episodes have to be cut. I’m hopeful that after they get caught up, they’ll be able to create new episodes that fit the short format a little better. I do want to applaud them though because it sounds like they touched up the audio and maybe even re-recorded some lines.

Human Beans is another interesting one that follows sentient beans in the human world. It’s weird but fun.

One of my favorite new shorts though is S.T.A.R. Bursters. This is a series that redubs some old anime and creates hilarious shorts. Each one had me laughing, but I think so far the second one is my favorite.

One thing that I don’t like about Neon Konbini is that all of the shorts are mixed together and not all of them seem to have titles which makes it a little annoying if you want to show someone a specific one. That’s just how these types of shows are though.

Overall, Neon Konbini is full of fun, weird, and amazing content. If you’re looking for fun things to watch, you’ll probably find a couple things to enjoy in this program. What’s your favorite short?

Sean Bean Didn’t Keep Up With Game of Thrones, Responds to Ending

Sean Bean Didn’t Keep Up With Game of Thrones, Responds to Ending

When HBO’s Game of Thrones came to an end over two years ago, it led to quite the outcry from fans of both the show and book series alike. However, at least one person close to the show seems to be pleased with how things have ended.

In a recent interview with The Times (via IndieWire), actor Sean Bean — who played Ned Stark during the first season of Game of Thrones — revealed that he didn’t keep up with the show at all beyond the first season, but was finally told about how things ended up after assuring that he would forget how things end by the time he decided to watch the show himself.

When told that Bran becomes King of Westeros and Sansa Stark becomes Queen of the North in Winterfell, Bean seemed pleased, offering up a simple “Oh, good for them” in response to the fact that the Starks seemed to come out of things pretty clean. Bean also discussed how playing Ned proved to be a bit of an easier job than his previous role of Boromir in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, due to Bean not having to dive so deep into the lore of the Game of Thrones book series.

“Yeah, it was a much earthier role,” Bean said. “Also, we established that we would work on an accent that was similar to mine [for Ned]. So that also gave it that extra weight.”

It was announced last week that production on the feature had begun. Firestarter centers on an organization called the Department of Scientific Intelligence, aka “The Shop.” Two participants in their mysterious research program end up getting married and having a child. Their offspring, Charlie McGee, inherited pyrokinetic powers from her parents, who were given a low-grade hallucinogen called “Lot Six” during their college years. Now the government is trying to apprehend the young Charlie in order to harness her powerful and unique skills as a weapon.

The new adaptation will see Efron portraying the role of Andy McGee, a character previously portrayed by Golden Globe nominee David Keith. Meanwhile, Greyeyes has been cast to play John Rainbird, described as a relentless and powerful man who has been pushed into a violent life. The character was previously portrayed by George C. Scott in the first adaptation of the novel.

A brand new international trailer for the upcoming Mamoru Hosoda film Belle has been released, giving fans a taste of what’s to come in the film.

The highly anticipated anime film will be released next month and is the ninth project for Hosoda following his 2018 Oscar-nominated film Mirai. Belle has been described as a touching, coming-of-age story that’s told in a fantasy-filled visual style. The film follows 17-year-old Suzu, a student living in a rural village with her father. After one day entering “LJ,” a virtual world for 5 billion members on the internet, she meets a world-famous singer and embarks on a journey of adventures.

Belle is already one of the most anticipated anime films of the year, but thanks to its billing it’s being compared to some classics. The film is set to bring together a ton of top talent from Japan, including Jin Kim, a character designer who has worked on classic Disney films like Frozen and Moana, and Eric Wong, a British architect who helped create the world of “LJ” in the film.

Full Trailer for BOSCH Season 7 – The Fight For Justice Ends Here

full-trailer-for-bosch-season-7-the-fight-for-justice-ends-here.jpg

Bosch is the best police/detective series on TV, and it’s coming to an end with the upcoming seventh season. If you haven’t watched this show yet, you’ve got to jump in and experience it!

For those of you who have watched the series and are awaiting the final season, Amazon has released a full trailer that offers us a glimpse at what this next story will entail, and it looks great!

The series stars Titus Welliver as homicide Detective Harry Bosch, Jamie Hector as Detective Jerry Edgar, Amy Aquino as Lt. Grace Billets, Madison Lintz as Maddie Bosch, and Lance Reddick as Chief Irvin Irving.

This next season is based on Michael Connelly’s best-selling novels, in this story, “Harry Bosch, an LAPD homicide detective, stands trial for the fatal shooting of a serial murder suspect. A cold case involving the remains of a missing boy forces Bosch to confront his past. As daring recruit, Julia Brasher (Annie Wersching), catches his eye, and departmental politics heat up, Bosch will pursue justice at all costs.”

While this is the final season of Bosch, there is a spinoff series coming with Titus Welliver, Mimi Rogers, and Madison Lintz all on board to reprise their roles from the original series. That series will follow Harry Bosch, “as he embarks on the next chapter of his career and finds himself working with his one-time enemy and top-notch attorney Honey “Money” Chandler, played by Rogers. With a deep and complicated history between this unlikely pair, they must work together to do what they can agree on – finding justice.”

Bosch Season 7 is set to premiere on Amazon on June 25th, and I can wait to see how this intense and thrilling story plays out.
