Peter Mayhew The STAR WARS Actor Who Played Chewbacca Has Passed Away at 74

I’m sorry to report that actor Peter Mayhew has passed away. He is best known for playing Chewbacca in the Star Wars film franchise. He died on Tuesday April, 30th and his family announced his passing today on Twitter along with a statement:

This is such sad news and I hate to report it, but anyone who is a fan of Star Wars has a love for Mayhew and the work that he did on the films as he brought Chewbacca to life in the most glorious way. The statement says:

“He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca and it showed in ever frame of the films from his knock kneed running, firing his bowcaster from the hip, his bright blue eyes, down to each subtle movement of his head and mouth. But to him, the Star Wars family meant so much more to him than a role in a film. The relationships that began then grew into the friends and family that he would love for decades to come.”

Due to Mayhew’s limited mobility and recent health problems, Joonas Suotamo ended up replacing him in the recent films. This is what he had to say about the actor back in 2017:

“Chewbacca is one of the most iconic characters in the history of film and Peter’s development and portrayal of this beloved Wookiee has spread so much joy across the globe. Peter’s guidance and kindness have been invaluable gifts which warmed my spirit and prepared me for this journey. I aspire to make Peter proud and bring Star Wars fans the Chewie they know and love.”

I think we can all agree with that. Mayhew will be greatly missed, but he left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten and will live on for years to come. Our hearts go out to the Mayhew family.
