Joel McHale Gives Update on a COMMUNITY Movie, Saying We Are Closer Now Than Ever Before

Fans of the series Community have been holding out hope for a follow-up movie for years now. The show ran for six seasons from 2009-2015, and it got new life and an expanded fanbase while streaming during the pandemic. The series starred Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Pudi, Chevy Chase, Ken Jeong, and Jim Rash, and it took place at a community college, where a group of interesting and funny characters become friends.

After the character Abed (Pudi) exclaimed the line, “six seasons and a movie!” about his favorite show (The Cape, by the way), it became a mantra of the fans, and they’re holding out hope for this trajectory. In a recent interview with ComicBook, Joel McHale talked about the possibility of a movie, which seems like it’s more possible than ever:

“I’m setting aside all the money to make [the movie] happen. Before when I’d answer the question, I’d be like, ‘Maybe, I have no idea.’ But now, with its success on the streamers during the pandemic, the interest has returned. I would say it’s more likely than it was before, definitely, but it’s like building an aircraft carrier. You go, ‘We’re gonna do this, right? Yeah, okay, everybody’s here, we got the money.’ Now, this thing has to actually get built. There’s a lot more than just ‘Hey, let’s make a movie now, great.’ It’s a lot of moving parts. So I’m more positive than I was, definitely, but we’ll see. That’s a terrible answer, but definitely better than my answer two years ago.”

This is great news! Reboots and sequels are really popular, and I think this would do really well for fans of the series, original and new. Are you excited for the possibility of the Community movie?
