The popular rock band Foo Fighters set out on a journey to make a crazy-ass horror movie with Studio 666. I’d been looking forward to watching this movie, so I headed out over the weekend to watch it and I’ve got to say, it was a complete blast!
I really wasn’t expecting much from it, but damn… it was entertaining. Yeah, this was a B-horror movie, and it was completely silly and ridiculous. But, the movie knew exactly what it was and it didn’t pretend to be anything else. The creative team behind the film just leaned into the absurdity of the story and then, of course, there was all of the over-the-top blood a gore.
I grew up watching these kinds of insane horror movies. There’s really an art to making them so that they actually turn out entertaining and not feel stupid or annoying. Dave Grohl and director BJ McDonnell (Hatchet III) actually managed to pull it off.
Along with all of the wicked violence, the movie also had a great sense of humor and I couldn’t help but laugh over the course of watching the movie. This is just good old-fashioned filmmaking and I loved that they used practical effects on all of the bloody bodily harm that was featured.
The story for the film came from Grohl, and it was actually shot at Grohl’s own Studio 606. The film also stars Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee, plus Whitney Cummings, Leslie Grossman, Will Forte, Jenna Ortega, and Jeff Garlin. Don’t expect good acting!
The movie follows the Foo Fighters band as they set out to record their 10th studio album in an old house, and from there everything starts to fall apart.
In the story, they “move into an Encino mansion steeped in grisly rock and roll history to record their much anticipated 10th album. Once in the house, Dave Grohl finds himself grappling with supernatural forces that threaten both the completion of the album and the lives of the band.”
The trouble is that the front man is creatively blocked, “and when evil forces in the house sink into his consciousness, the creative juices begin flowing but so does the blood. Can Foo Fighters’ complete the album, with the band still alive to tour?”
You’ll just have to watch the movie and see! If you’re a fan of B-horror and you do decide to watch Studio 666, there’s no doubt that you’re going to have a great time watching it!
