Channing Tatum has been working so hard to get his Gambit Marvel movie off the ground and into production for years. It’s been close to happening a couple of times, but when Disney bought Fox there was a good chance that the project wouldn’t end up happening.
Well, it appears the Gambit project has been officially canceled. The possibility of making the movie was being evaluated by Marvel and Disney, but it didn’t make it. Yesterday Disney released a bunch of new release dates for the films they have coming out, including all the Fox properties that they decided to keep. Gambit was not on that list.
I’m not surprised. I’m sure that one day we will see Gambit back up on the big screen, but when it happens, Tatum most likely won’t be involved. I was one of the few who would have liked to see Tatum’s vision of Gambit brought to life, unfortunately it just wasn’t meant to be.
When previously talking about Tatum’s version of the film, producer Simon Kinberg said that it would have had a “romantic or sex comedy vibe” to it. He explained:
“When you look at Gambit. He’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy. Deadpool was an R-rated, raunchy comedy, Logan was a western, Gambit’s gonna be a romantic comedy, and New Mutants is very decidedly a horror film.”
Kinberg went on to clarify labeling the film a romantic comedy saying:
“You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely. It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.”
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously said that it would be at least five years before we see any of the X-Men characters back up on the big screen, so we’ve got a long way to go. Hell, my kid will be in her first year of college by the time that happens!
