The Editor of AVENGERS: ENDGAME is Responsible for One of the Film’s Greatest Lines

I feel like we are in the clear at this point, and also, who is clicking on these articles who hasn’t seen the movie yet? Anyway, if that is you, here’s a spoiler alert warning just in case.

There were absolutely some great and memorable lines in the movie Avengers: Endgame. Funny quips from Tony Stark and Scott Lang, and even the usually serious Captain America. One of the most memorable and touching was the line, “I love you 3,000,” the origin of which you can read about here. But probably the most badass line in the movie was when Thanos said, “I am inevitable,” for like the third time, then looked over to Tony Stark, who had all the stones in his iron glove, and heard Stark say, “And I… am Iron Man.” It brought the whole line of movies right back around to the first film, Iron Man, and was the perfect response.

But apparently it wasn’t in the first draft of the script. Originally, after Thanos said his line, Stark just responded by snapping his fingers, but the Russos felt like there was something missing. Here’s how they explained the story in a recent Q&A.

“Tony used to not say anything in that moment. And we were in the editing room going, ‘He has to say something. This is a character who has lived and died by quips.’ And we just couldn’t, we tried a million different last lines. Thanos was saying “I am inevitable.” And our editor Jeff Ford, who’s been with us all four movies and is an amazing storyteller, said ‘Why don’t we just go full circle with it and say I am Iron Man.’ And we’re like, ‘Get the cameras! We have to shoot this tomorrow.’”

I think this is actually pretty crazy that no one else thought of this, because after Thanos’s line, when they panned over to Stark, I said the line right along with him. It was the only thing he could say. It was perfection! Although, Robert Downey Jr. was actually apprehensive about the delivery. Joe Russo explained what happened when they pitched it to him:

It’s an interesting story. I had dinner with [Robert Downey Jr.] like two weeks before we were supposed to shoot it. And he was like, ‘I don’t know. I don’t really want to go back and get into that emotional state. It’ll take… it’s hard.’ And crazily enough, Joel Silver, the producer, was at the dinner. He’s an old buddy of Robert’s. And Joel jumps in and he’s like, ‘Robert, what are you talking about? That’s the greatest line I’ve ever heard! You gotta say this line! You have to do this!’ So thank God that Joel Silver was at dinner, because he helped us talk Robert into doing that line.

That’s crazy! Good thing he came to his senses, because that was such a poignant line, and it shouldn’t have gone any other way.

What was your favorite line in the movie?
