Director Joe Russo Talks About Planting BLACK WIDOW Prequel Film Seeds in AVENGERS: ENDGAME

If you haven’t seen Avengers: Endgame yet, I’m going to throw up a spoiler warning just to be safe before I begin.

While Avengers: Endgame brought a conclusion to Black Widow’s story arc as she heroically sacrificed herself so that the Avengers would be able to get their hands on the Soul Stone to reverse the effects of “The Snap.”

Regardless of her death, we are still getting a prequel movie for Black Widow that will explore her past, and in a recent interview, director Joe Russo talks about planting the seeds for that prequel film in Endgame.

As you know Black Widow has a story to tell regarding some kind of mission in Budapest. While it was brought up in the original Avengers film, it was also brought up again in Endgame. When Budapest was brought up in the interview, Russo teased:

“That’s the question, isn’t it? Seems like a story for another time.”

Does that mean the prequel film will actually dive into this Budapest story? Seems like the story that Marvel has been looking at setting up and if that’s the case, maybe Hawkeye will be involved as well.

We also learned the name of Black Widow’s father in the film, which is another seed that may have been planted in Endgame to set up what’s to come in the spinoff movie. In case you forgot his name is Ivan. When talking about these seeds, Russo said:

“It’s putting seeds in to fulfill our story, and that’s what we do in the Marvel Universe is someone comes in and they pick up the threads, right, but there isn’t, the grand plan is always ‘we have a loose idea of where we can go here’, but if you spend a lot of energy thinking about where it goes in the future you’re gonna miss the opportunities that are in front of you in the present. If you don’t make a really good film, nobody’s going to be around for the next one, you know, so we really focus on the present story not on where this is all going.”

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland and Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role and star alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family), who will play the second female lead who has been described as a “kick ass female Bond” type character. The movie will also star David Harbour and Rachel Weisz.

Do you think that the Black Widow movie will tell the Budapest story or do you think it will do something different? What story do you want to see explored in the film?
