David Ayer Blames BATMAN V SUPERMAN and DEADPOOL for Changing His SUICIDE SQUAD Movie

Director David Ayer clearly isn’t satisfied with the cut of Suicide Squad that Warner Bros. wanted him to release. He recently said that his version of the film has never been seen and he would be open to put together a cut of his film and have it released on HBO Max just like Zack Snyder is getting to do with Justice League.

He recently took to Twitter to explain that the studio’s responses to both Batman v Superman and Deadpool didn’t help his film at all. He explained:

“This trailer nailed the tone and intention of the film I made. Methodical. Layered. Complex, beautiful and sad. After the BVS reviews shell shocked the leadership at the time, and the success of Deadpool – My soulful drama was beaten into a ‘comedy’”

In case you’re curious, I posted the trailer that he’s talking about at the end of the post. It’s interesting to see how the studio executives reacted to those films and how it led them to force Ayer to change his movie.

He went on to explains that he had to reshoot because the studio felt the tone was too dark, and he also explained that he initially took his inspiration from Christopher Nolan:

“This was reshot because the tone was ‘too dark’ – My first act was a normally constructed film. I took my inspiration from Nolan. There were real scenes with incredible acting between Jared and Margot. Joker was terrifying. Harley was complex”

There were actually a lot of things that I liked about Suicide Squad, and I’d be curious to see what Ayer had originally envisioned for the film. With Snyder getting a chance to share his vision, there’s a chance that Ayer could get the same opportunity.

Here are some other things that David Ayer revealed about his original cut of Suicide Squad in which he says he had written “a perfectly coherent script. And Joker was rich and dimensional.”
