Darby Camp and Jack Whitehall Cast in CLIFFORD, THE BIG RED DOG

In case you forgot like I did, Paramount is creating a film adaptation of Clifford, the Big Red Dog. They recently announced two cast members: Darby Camp and Jack Whitehall. Camp will be starring in the lead role of Emily Elizabeth with Whitehall playing her Uncle Casey. Here’s a description of the plot:

The movie will see Emily (Camp) struggling to fit in at home and at school, discover a small red puppy who is destined to become her best friend. When Clifford magically undergoes one heck of a growth spurt, becomes a gigantic dog and attracts the attention of a genetics company, Emily and her Uncle Casey (Whitehall) have to fight the forces of greed as they go on the run across New York City. Along the way, Clifford affects the lives of everyone around him and teaches Emily and her uncle the true meaning of acceptance and unconditional love.

This does not sound like any of the books I read as a kid. Stan Chervin, Annie Muolo, David Ronn, and Jay Scherick wrote the script which sounds loosely based on the books by Norman Bridwell. Clifford will be directed by Walt Becker and will begin shooting this June in New York. I’m very confused at how they came across this story for the lovable red dog. What do you think of this take on the classic character? Who do you think they’ll get to do the motion capture for Clifford?
